Translation Editor
The translation editor is where you do the actual translation work. It displays segments side by side with editable target fields, status indicators, and inline action buttons.
Segment Workflow
Every segment passes through a six-stage workflow. Each stage is shown as a colored status icon next to the segment:
| Status | Color | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Untranslated | Gray | Segment has no target text yet. |
| Draft | Yellow | Target has been edited but not yet finalized. |
| Translated | Blue | Target has been written. Auto-set when applying TM, MT, or copy-source. |
| Reviewed | Light blue | Translated content has been reviewed (typically by a second person). |
| Confirmed | Green | Final, approved translation. Saved to TM. Auto-propagates to identical segments. |
| Locked | Dark | Manually locked to prevent any further changes (skipped by QA, batch ops, and pre-translate). |
Confirming a Segment (⌘↩)
Pressing ⌘↩ while editing a target field confirms the segment. This:
- Sets the status to Confirmed.
- Saves the source/target pair to the project’s Translation Memory.
- Auto-propagates the translation to any identical segments in the file (Premium).
- Optionally moves to the next segment, depending on your Settings > Editor > Confirm moves to next segment preference.
Per-Segment Actions
When a segment is selected (single-selection), action buttons appear below the row:
- Copy Source — Copies the source text into the target field. Useful for segments that should remain untranslated (e.g., proper names, code snippets, URLs).
- Copy Numbers — Appears when the source contains numbers. Inserts only the numeric values from the source into the target, useful for table cells or short numeric data.
- Split Segment… — Opens a dialog to split the current segment into two segments at a chosen position. Useful when imported segments are too long.
- Merge with Next — Combines the current segment with the next one. Source and target texts are concatenated.
- Translate — Calls the configured LLM provider for a single-segment AI translation. Inserts the result into the target field and sets status to Translated.
Find & Replace (⌘F)
The Find & Replace bar appears between the toolbar and segment list. It searches across both source and target text in the currently selected file.
- Find field — Type to search. Matches are highlighted in real time.
- Replace field — Optional replacement text. Only target text is modified by replace operations; source text is read-only.
- Navigation arrows — Jump to the previous or next match.
- Replace — Replaces the current match.
- Replace All — Replaces every match in the current file. A confirmation dialog shows the number of changes before applying.
- Close (×) — Hides the Find & Replace bar.
Locked segments are skipped by Replace and Replace All.
Filtering Segments
The status filter dropdown in the editor toolbar lets you show only segments matching a given status:
- All — Default. Shows every segment in the file.
- Untranslated, Draft, Translated, Reviewed, Confirmed, Locked — Show only segments with the selected status.
The filter combines with the search field: typing in the search field filters within the currently selected status.
Multi-Selection & Batch Operations
Select multiple segments using one of these methods:
- Click the selection checkbox next to each segment number to toggle it in or out of the selection (recommended).
- ⌘+Click a segment row to add it to the selection.
- ⇧+Click to select a range of segments.
When two or more segments are selected, the Batch Action Bar appears at the top of the segment list. See Interface Overview for the full list of batch actions.
Premium Batch Operations
The following batch operations require a Premium subscription:
- Confirm Selected — Confirms all selected segments at once.
- Clear Translations — Removes target text from selected segments and resets status to Untranslated.
- Delete Selected — Permanently removes selected segments after confirmation.
- Copy Source to All Empty — Fills every untranslated segment with its source text (useful as a baseline before manual translation).
The non-premium Merge Selected action remains available on the free tier.
Inline Tags
Source text imported from formatted documents (DOCX, PPTX) may contain inline tags representing bold, italic, underline, hyperlinks, and other formatting. Tags are displayed as compact placeholders like {0}, {1}, etc.
- Tag protection: When using AI translation, tags are masked before sending to the LLM and restored afterward. If the LLM modifies or drops a tag, tradumak attempts auto-repair.
- QA validation: The Missing Tag, Extra Tag, and Tag Order Mismatch QA checks ensure tags are preserved correctly in the target.
- Export: Tags are reapplied to the original formatting when you export to native DOCX or XLSX.
Auto-Save
Projects are auto-saved at a configurable interval (default 5 minutes). Auto-save only triggers when there are unsaved changes and only after the project has been saved to a file at least once. The status bar shows “Auto-saved.” after each successful save.
You can also save manually anytime with ⌘S.
